August 1, 2001 - Couple Sues Over Viagra Warnings

A Flagler County married couple is going to file a lawsuit against Pfizer, the manufacturer of a popular potency drug Viagra.

Les Colombo and Karen Colombo of Palm Coast are suing Pfizer and its subsidiaries and are seeking damages in excess of $15,000 for the physical harm that Mr. Colombo suffered when he took the drug.

The husband who has type II Diabetes, took a normal dosage of the pill in December 1999. Within a few hours of taking the drug, he suffered damage to the peripheral vision in the inside corners of both eyes and the pupil area of just one eye. As a result, he lost 30 to 40 percent of his sight.

The lawyer for the family alleges Pfizer knew the drug could harm eye sight in people with diabetes and failed to adequately inform and warn patients and physicians. The suit charges the manufacturer with eight counts of illegal activity, including negligent misrepresentation and defective design.

However, according to the American Diabetes Association, impotence and some vision problems are common side effects of diabetes.
